Longer PhotoVision Classes

Every photographer has the same basic tools—lenses and camera bodies—to take pictures.  What sets apart the photographers we most admire is their unique, personal vision, expressed and shared through their images.

Weekend PhotoVision Classes give students a longer experience and take them to photogenic sites outside the Twin Cities.  Over the course of the workshop, each student can focus on the areas of growth in vision and technique that he or she most values, and enjoy the camaraderie and experience-sharing of a collegial, small group of learners.

Finding Your Personal Photographic Vision
July 13-15, 2012
   Advance Your Photography Skills In A Weekend PhotoVision Class

    You can move your digital photography to new levels in my weekend-long, hands-on classes. You’ll work on developing your artistic and technical skills and explore photogenic landscapes in a collegial, small-group workshop. In July, we’ll be working along the scenic North Shore of Lake Superior, using the woods, rocks, and water to make fantastic landscape photography!

Take Great Photographs In Amazing Settings.
    Weekend classes are appropriate for students any stage of their photo development - beginners as well as photographers with prior experience will all move ahead.
    We’ll all be shooting with Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras, probably a selection of lenses, a tripod for sure, and extra digital storage and backup batteries so you can work all day. We’ll be out for sunrise on Saturday and Sunday, and work the light throughout the day.

Your Photos Should Reflect Your Vision.
    It’s not hard to take OK pictures with the current crop of DSLRs - they have all the features and technical capacity to produce acceptable images in most shooting situations. It’s moving beyond the OK to the impressive in your photography that’s the challenge.
    Successful photography is a combination of artistic skills and technical understanding. Like all other artists, photographers must know their tools and how to put those tools to best effect, and must also have a knowledge of composition, selection, and arrangement of elements in their photos. DSLRs are powerful tools, but you need to learn how to get the best from those tools. That’s where my weekend class excels!

Get Beyond Your Roadblocks.
    You can take better pictures when you have the key skills. You can get beyond the program settings and automatic adjustments that your DSLR can make for you. When you do, you will take charge of the images you are making. Regardless of the issues that are holding you back, a weekend class has the time and the variety of experiences to help you advance.

I Can Help - I Know Digital Photography.
    If you’ve looked around the Galleries on this site, you’ve seen plenty of evidence that I know how to find and take great images of the natural world. I’ve been shooting exclusively digital for the last 10 years and know the hows and whys of DSLRs. And I think you’ll agree that I bring back emotive and compelling photos from my field work. That’s the experience and understanding you can tap into through the course of my weekend class.

I’ve Been Teaching Adult Learners For Over 20 Years.
    I work with adult learners in the classroom and in the field. My students range from absolute beginners who have just figured out how to turn on their DSLR, to experienced photographers looking for tips on a particular technique, to accomplished visual artists who need to take better photos as part of their creative process. I’ve helped them all, whether it has been moving from program to manual modes on their camera, more exciting composition, or dealing with difficult lighting conditions.
    I only teach in one-on-one sessions and small groups, because that’s how effective teaching works! My weekend PhotoVision class is focussed on getting every student moving towards better photography right away.

My Students Learn.
    I know from the comments of my students that my teaching is effective. I enjoy leading photographers through the discovery process, and helping them find new ways to use their DSLRs to express their artistic vision - and that’s what happens in my classes. Students really see their own growth at the end of the weekend.

My Weekend Class Meets Students’ Needs.
    During the course of a typical weekend class, students will:
• take greater control of their shooting by using the manual controls on their camera;
• find more compelling compositions for their photos;
• experiment with controlling depth of field and shutter speed to bring out the artistic aspects of their images;
• practice their new skills so the techniques we work on over the weekend become part of their muscle memory;
• review their current work with an eye towards identifying the strongest attributes of their work; and,
• have fun!
    But every class is different, because the students in each class have different needs. So I will adapt the teaching that takes place throughout the weekend to match the students’ needs and skills.

Completely Guaranteed.
    At the end of the weekend, if you don’t think I have improved your confidence, skills, and photo technique, I’ll refund your tuition. Simple as that.

You Get Real Value In My Weekend Class.
    The price of education is going up everywhere. But my one-day class is the same price as it was in 2010. You get all the skills and personal development for $275.00 for the weekend.
    The class will convene Friday evening in Silver Bay for an introductory session, and then we will be out with our cameras at sunrise Saturday. We’ll have a complete day of shooting along the North Shore on Saturday, break during the day for a classroom session on photo and Photoshop skills, and eat dinner together to debrief the day. Sunday will see us shooting at a different sunrise venue, and then start our journey towards home, looking for some final great images on the way. Click here to download a brochure for the class.

Only Six Students Per Class.
    I won’t teach in large groups, and my weekend PhotoVision classes are limited to six students. The downside to that limit is that not everyone who wants to take my classes gets in - registration is strictly first-come, first- taught! I hate to turn away prospective students, but I won’t sacrifice quality instruction.

Don’t Put It Off - When A Class Is Full, That’s It!

What a combination: you not only get great instruction, you go home with an inspiring print!
    In the registration form I’ll send you when you email me by clicking here, I’ll ask you to select the image you want, and I’ll have that ready for you during class.

Custom Group Trips

    In addition to the pre-set weekend PhotoVision classes, I offer personalized trips throughout the year. If you have a family with a mix of ages and interests, we can plan a weekend that lets all the family members see sights and take pictures of things they enjoy. If you are a group of friends who want to take a class to some favorite locations together, we can find dates to go with just your group. If you want an extended one-on-one workshop, we’ll go to the places you want to see. Flexibility is the key word here, and I will do my best to build a custom expedition just for you!

    We can explore scenic areas around the upper Midwest, from the stunning coastlines of Lake Superior, to woods and woodlands of Minnesota and Wisconsin, or out to the awesome beauty of South Dakota’s Badlands. Pick your favorite location, or try a spot you’ve never seen before - either way we’ll combine the beauty and wonder of nature with personal photo skills development at a level designed just for you or your group.
