 New Classes

I’ve set dates for new “One-Day Fundamentals” classes and for a Winter weekend PhotoVision class to the North Shore of Lake Superior.
There are also a few spots left in the January “Introduction to Photoshop” class. Check the “Classes/Trips” pages to sign up before your spot in a class is gone!

 Holiday Sale

The Vine Arts Holiday Sale was great - I got to talk with several old friends and make quite a few new ones!

 New Gallery area

I’ve set up a “Recent Work” gallery to hold new images from recent shoots. I’ll keep those recent images in that gallery for a bit, and then move them into permanent homes in other, topical galleries.

 A Great Day at Como!

The booth at the Como Japanese Garden in St. Paul for the annual Lantern Lighting Festival went very well. As you can see, it was an excellent location, right in front of the Arboretum main entrance.

I had great reactions to the prints, cards, and puzzles I displayed with a Garden theme, as well as those from elsewhere around Minnesota. The crowd was up from last year, and the weather perfect: mostly sunny with a nice breeze all afternoon.

I had been able to get some new images at the Garden just a week before the Festival, and I’ve added several of those images to the Galleries.

 Video from Three Urban Waterfalls

I made a cycle of the three waterfalls that are within the boundaries of Minneapolis and St. Paul last weekend. While the weather here was beastly, the overcast skies made for a good morning of capturing the three falls. All were running well after a serious downpour overnight, so the video clips really show them at their peaks!

This is Hidden Falls - tucked away in a small city park in St. Paul, flowing into the Mississippi River from the east bank. It drops down a series of steps for quite a ways below the falls. You can see a vertical still image of the whole spillway in the “Water” gallery.

Still on the east bank of the Mississippi, but upstream in Minneapolis, Bridal Veil Falls has a longer, wider drop. You can see how steamy the morning was - way too high humidity to be comfortable.

And, finally, Minnehaha Falls, the jewel of the Minneapolis Parks. Lots of restoration work on the WPA-vintage construction around the Falls was done last year; you can see an image from a vantage point that had been obscured for years by scrub trees in the “Water” gallery.

My Water Photography Book is Available.

I’ve been writing a guide to water photography this year, and I am very pleased to announce that the book, “Mastering Water Photography: Artistry and Technique” is now available as an e-book on Apple’s iBookstore. It works as a great pocket reference on the iPhone, and is even more impressive on the iPad where the larger scale of the images and pages of text can be fully appreciated. The e-book is only $9.99, and you can locate it quickly by searching “sandberg.”

For site subscribers, I’ve put an excerpt from the book (as a PDF file) in the subscribers-only area so you can get a feel for my approach and style in the book. Drop me a note here if you want to become a subscriber to this site.

 My Sugarloaf Cove Images Featured

Deborah Cramer is the author of "Smithsonian Ocean: Our Water Our World", the companion to the new Sant Ocean Hall at the National Museum of Natural History. She is developing an exciting new online project called "Sea Around You", which explores the sea in places where you would you least expect.

One of the sections of the site examines the connection between the sea and the Great Lakes, and discusses the lava rock at Sugarloaf Cove on the North Shore of Lake Superior here in Minnesota. I've worked with the Cove for the last three years, and one of my 2009 images from that striking site on the North Shore is now the featured image for the Great Lakes portion of the site! Take a look at http://seaaroundyou.com/water-from-the-gulf-of-mexico-in-the-great-lakes/.

You can also see my photos on the new Sugarloaf Cove Website - all the banner images on the main pages are my shots!
