Date Change for September Photoshop Class

I’ve moved the dates for my September Intro to Photoshop class back one week, to September 11 and 18, to remove a conflict with Labor Day. If you were not able to sign up for the class because of a conflict on August 4, hopefully this will fix that problem!

PhotoVision Class update - Como Park is On!

Once a year, the Como Park Japanese Garden holds its Lantern Lighting Festival, when paper lanterns float across the pond and stone lanterns glow in the dark. I led a class during the Festival last year, and I’ll be doing that again this August 15. This class sold out very quickly last year, so don’t put off registering!

The class will offer the chance to work on compositional and emotional skills, and to experience an unusual photo environment, as we shoot in and around the Garden during the afternoon, explore the sights and sounds of the Obon Festival, and then capture the ephemeral lanterns at dusk.

Announcing a Student Photo Contest

I love posting photos from all my students - you can see samples here.

In celebration of Summer, I’ve decided to have a Student Photo Contest.

Here’s how it will work:
 • anyone who has taken any class from me at any time is eligible to enter up to three photos;
• the photos must be taken between June 15 and August 15, 2010;
• the photos must fit into the Contest theme - “Summer Light.”

Let your imagination run free and get some great images. I’ll post directions for uploading in early August, and there will be prizes for the top three photos!

PhotoVision Classes and Expeditions for mid-2010

I’ve put up the dates for my classes for the next six months, including a new Twin Cities day-long outing, a trip to the North Shore, a long-weekend Photo Vision Expedition to the Black Hills, and a Photoshop class. Click here to jump to that section of the site.

All my classes and field workshops are very small groups - four or six students maximum. I have tried working with larger groups, and I’ve found that it’s just not possible to give each student the time and personal attention needed for real growth to take place. I’ve been teaching adult learners for 20+ years, and I’ve developed a good feel for when a class is working and when it isn’t; larger groups don’t work and students just don’t get their money’s worth.

Whether you’re looking to master the fundamentals of using your digital SLR, ready to expand your creative approach to picture taking, or want to figure out how to use Photoshop to make better prints, there’s a class waiting for you. Click on “Classes/Trips” to jump to the pages about my upcoming sessions - I’d really like to help you develop your photography!

My Sugarloaf Cove Image Featured!

Deborah Cramer is the author of "Smithsonian Ocean: Our Water Our World", the companion to the new Sant Ocean Hall at the National Museum of Natural History. She is developing an exciting new online project called "Sea Around You", which explores the sea in places where you would you least expect.

One of the sections of the site examines the connection between the sea and the Great Lakes, and discusses the lava rock at Sugarloaf Cove on the North Shore of Lake Superior here in Minnesota. I've worked with the Cove for the last two years, and one of my 2009 images from that striking site on the North Shore is now the featured image for the Great Lakes portion of the site! Take a look at http://seaaroundyou.com/water-from-the-gulf-of-mexico-in-the-great-lakes/.

Desktop and iPhone Images for Subscribers
As a special benefit to subscribers, I've set up a subscribers-only page of images for use as desktop and iPhone backgrounds. The desktop images are available in two sizes, and the iPhone images are sized for that purpose
 If you haven't signed up yet, just send an email by clicking here with the word "subscribe" in the subject line; I'll add you to the list and send you the link!
Please note that is the only use that is authorized for these images - they may not be printed or reposted elsewhere.

Give the Gift of Education

All of my classes and workshops make great gifts! If you have a budding photographer in the family or in your circle of friends, they would love some individual instruction time in the classroom or in the field. Drop me an email and I’ll prepare a gift certificate for you to wrap and surprise that special person.

Shooting in the Black Hills

South-western South Dakota and south-eastern Wyoming share the Black Hills: a unique geological formation that began with volcanic mountain-building activity and has left us with uplifts of Harney Peak Granite that have been carved into amazing shapes (both naturally and by human hands.) I was able to spend some time in the area this Fall, and I’ve added images of the astounding landscape to the Land, Water, and Mysterious Places galleries. I’ll be returning this Fall for an extended PhotoVision Expedition - click here for more info.

Wow, that was fun...

My “Water Seen and Felt” show has closed - what an exciting event! I’ve put some of my thoughts about the show process on the Photoblog, and you can see the Show site here.

PhotoCalc app for iPhone.
I've been playing with a great new app for photographers from Adair Systems called PhotoCalc. This is an iPhone/iPod Touch app that makes some awkward calculations very easy to do in the field.
