Featured Image Number 1

“Winter Lace”
Winter in Minnesota usually means snow and ice that last for months…but not this winter so far. It’s been unseasonably warm at the end of 2011 and into the beginning of 2012 here in the Star of the North. As I write this note in early January, the daytime high in Minneapolis was 45º - only two degrees short of an all-time record!
So, I’ve selected an image from a “normal” winter to remind us of what the Minnesota landscape is supposed to look like this time of the year.
I enjoy shooting water all year round, and capturing its varied moods and appearances throughout the seasons. This winter shot catches a local river with water in two states simultaneously: liquid and solid. The lacy forms of the ice capping the running water are as delicate as real lace, but much more ephemeral. A sunny day or a few degrees warmer, and their beauty will simply melt away. The impermanence of the ice, contrasted with the permanence of the rocks below, appealed to me as a metaphor for winter and for life. I hope you enjoy the image, whether or not there is ice in your local landscape today.

Every six weeks or so, I'll post a Featured Image here. These are images that I feel merit special attention, and that I want to put under a spotlight for a limited period of time.
The Featured Image is available in all four print sizes, at a discount of 20% from the usual prices for those sizes, and that discount is only available for the six week period. The usual series print limits apply: if there are prints available after the six weeks, they will be at regular prices.
