So Tired
His team was sacked out at the Sawbill mandatory rest stop - truly pooped pups!

Huskies
I really enjoyed watching the different personalities of the dog sled teams that emerged during the course of the Beargrease weekend. These Huskies struck me as "formal" in the same way that penguins are formal....but furrier.

Booties
I made it back from the Beargrease with no frostbite, and some good shots. This team was running hard on the first day of the race, and I couldn't pass up getting a picture of their matching orange booties.
January 23, 2009: Heading North
I'll be heading to the North Shore of Lake Superior later today. Two friends and I will be shooting the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon this weekend. The Beargrease commemorates the life of John Beargrease, the son of a Ojibwe chief who delivered mail by dog sled along Lake Superior’s rugged North Shore in the late 19th century.
The Beargrease started in 1981. and has grown to be the premier sled dog race of the Upper Midwest, drawing world-class dog teams from across the nation and around the globe. The Beargrease is the longest and most challenging of sled dog events in the lower 48 states, and is a qualifying race for Alaska’s long-distance race, the Iditarod.
I haven't gone to the Beargrease before, so this will be an entirely new experience for me. Weather forecasts for the weekend and Monday are for highs in the single digits and lows in the single digits below zero. We'll be doing both daytime and night shooting, so I'm packing warm!
I don't expect to have internet connectivity north of Duluth, so there will probably be a gap in the PhotoBlog for a few days - hopefully some good pictures to make up for it!
